Ireland’s
Biomethane Hub
An independent, not-for-profit project supporting Ireland’s biomethane journey.
How Biomethane Works
Nature-powered energy, farm feedstocks transformed into biomethane.
feedstock
Organic materials like grass
silage, slurry or food waste are
collected from local farms.

These materials are broken down
in an anaerobic digester,
producing biogas.
biomethane
The gas is cleaned and upgraded
to biomethane — ready to
replace fossil fuels.
About the Project
Biomethane for Carbon and Community (BCC) is a collaborative initiative focused on helping Ireland transition to renewable, locally-produced energy while supporting farmers, rural communities, and climate action.
Led by Tipperary County Council, the Technological University of the Shannon, the Irish Bioeconomy Foundation, and the Tipperary Energy Agency, this project aims to enable biomethane development across the region and beyond.
Community Impact
Why It Matters Locally
Cuts emissions
By replacing fossil fuels with
locally produced biomethane,
communities can significantly
lower their carbon footprint
while contributing to Ireland’s
climate goals.
Supports farmers
Biomethane production creates
new income opportunities for
farmers through the supply of
feedstocks and the reuse of
digestate, strengthening rural
economies.
Boosts biodiversity
By encouraging sustainable land
use and reducing reliance on
chemical fertilisers, biomethane
projects can help protect and
restore local ecosystems.
Estimate Your Biomethane Potential
Curious how much renewable energy you could produce from your land or farm waste? Use this simple calculator to find out your biomethane potential and see how you could take part in Ireland’s clean energy transition.
