What is
Biomethane?
A renewable gas made from organic materials
powering Ireland’s clean energy future.
Biomethane
A Clean, Renewable Gas Made from What We Already Have
Biomethane is a renewable gas produced from organic materials such as slurry, grass silage, food waste, and other biodegradable materials. It’s almost identical to the natural gas we already use in homes and businesses but it comes from farms and food waste instead of fossil fuels.
How is Biomethane Made?
Biomethane is produced through a natural process called anaerobic digestion (AD).
feedstock
Organic materials like grass
silage, slurry or food waste are
collected from local farms.
ad plant
These materials are broken down
in an anaerobic digester,
producing biogas naturally.
Upgrading
The gas is cleaned and upgraded
to biomethane ready to replace
fossil fuels.
how is it used
Biomethane is a flexible, renewable energy source that can be injected into the national gas grid or used directly for a wide range of needs from heating homes, schools, and hospitals, to powering trucks, buses, and agricultural machinery.
It also supports electricity generation in both rural and urban areas and offers a clean energy solution for industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
